FITNESS

In February 2003, Paul Zane Pilzer was the Keynote Speaker at the 22nd Annual International Convention of IHRSA, the world’s leading association of fitness professionals. In his latest book, Pilzer describes the story of Jill Kinney of Club One Inc, a personal trainer turned fitness club owner who parlayed her holistic interest in Wellness into a $US 100 million business.

"Thousands of studies have shown direct relationships between a lack of physical activity and coronary heart disease, hypertension, cancer, diabetes, anxiety, and depression. Yet amazingly, only 15% of US adults engage in regular vigorous physical activity, and 60% report getting effectively no exercise at all from a regular or sustained leisure time activity. Fortunately, just as there are wellness entrepreneurs using technology to change our diets and to ensure we get the minimal daily building blocks of our cellular material, wellness entrepreneurs are also beginning to use technology to change how and where we get our exercise. One who stands out in particular is fitness entrepreneur Jill Stevens Kinney. Her story, and the rapid rise of her company Club One Inc, illustrates some of the potential for the $24 billion fitness industry in the coming $1 trillion wellness economy. In the late 1980s, Kinney began to notice that baby boomers were becoming more concerned with wellness and aging issues than with sports and social activities. With her husband John Kinney, she opened her first Club One facility in 1991. They focussed on providing a convenient location and more importantly, attracting the best fitness professionals (trainers, nutritionists, yoga teachers, massage therapists etc) as dedicated professional employees rather than as independent contractors without benefits, continuing education or defined career paths. Their plan worked. Club One quickly went from start-up to sales of $60 million per year and 71 locations – one of the fastest growing businesses in the fitness club industry."
